CHAPTER NINETEEN

Alexander was playing a very dangerous game. What had gotten into him? He was curious about her story. He was, but was he willing to risk telling her his true feelings, only to be rejected? He wasn’t sure he could answer that with certainty.

“I confess that I should like to read your story,” he said, but he was unsure about the rest. “But I do not think that I can tell you what you wish to know right now.”

“And why is that, Alexander?” she asked, her eyes giving nothing away as the first course was served.

“Because my secret involves more than just me. We will see how this Season unfolds, but I do not think that she is ready to accept my affections as of yet. I am taking this Season one day at a time. It is a slow process.”

She nodded. “That makes very logical sense, though you know I would never tell anyone, least of all the one involved.”

He nodded, though he knew it was much more complicated than that right now. “But believe me when I say that you will be the first to know when I am ready to share the information.”

“You are doing this out of respect for her?”

“Yes, until I know if my attentions are wanted, I will wait a little longer.”

“That is most noble of you.” She took a small breath and then nodded her head. “Very well, Alexander, you may read my story. I should like to know what you think of it.”

“Are you sure, Lizzie?”

She smiled. “I am quite sure, Alexander.”

“I look forward to reading it,” he whispered. Anticipation filled him. He wanted to tell her the truth of all his feelings, but now wasn’t the time. “I wish I could share my own secret right now.”

“I understand why you cannot. When you are ready to share, you will. That is enough.” She gave him a smile, but it didn’t seem to reach her eyes. She sat up straighter. “When you are finished with my story, you may tell me what you think of it. I should like your candid opinions about my work.”

He nodded. “You know I will always tell you what I think, without any reservation. I shall begin reading tonight.”

After their conversation, Lady Lansdowne engaged him in conversation about his estate and about his improvements to the land. She asked after his stables and the tenants and was very well versed, knowing the names of the prominent families in the area, and the different roads to use during this time of the year.

Alexander tried his best to pay attention, and to be social with the group as a whole, but he wanted nothing more than to be alone with the woman who was next to him, and have her tell him all about the story he was going to read tonight.
